Windows 10 is Microsoft’s latest operating system, but given that the upgrade to Windows 8 did not exactly go according to plan, it’s not surprising that there might be some who are apprehensive about making the jump from Windows 7 to Windows 10. If you are a Windows 7 user who has yet to upgrade, you have until 2023 to decide.
This is according to a blog post on Microsoft’s website in which Microsoft confirms that support for Windows 7 will be extended to 2023. Previously Microsoft stated that support would officially end in 2020. However there is a big catch and that is if you want support until 2023, you’ll have to pay for it.
This means that support for Windows 7 will continue until 2020 as previously promised, but for users who for whatever reason still refuse to upgrade but still want to receive support for Windows 7, they’ll have to pay for it. Microsoft also notes that every year that customers wish to extend support (up to 2023), it will get increasingly expensive.
Some might think that it does make sense that users would still cling onto an operating system 14 years later, but it should be noted that a report from 2014 actually revealed that the majority of bank ATMs were still using Windows XP, so there are some who might find that the cost of paying for extended support could be cheaper than upgrading.
